This is the technical support page for C.A.T.S. Any information which arises after the publication of each CD will be detailed below.

So far, C.A.T.S has been successfully used on the following operating systems:

Installation

"Missing OLEAUT32.DLL"

Occasionally, when installing C.A.T.S, you will get an error message regarding a file called oleaut32.dll. Please see the readme.txt file on your cd-rom as this has full instructions on how to deal with this.

It is a rare problem, caused by some other software running on your PC not allowing the C.A.T.S installer to update this file. The solution is straight forward and it should only take a few minutes to follow the steps.

Installation freezes half way through

The problem can sometimes occur with Windows Vista or XP, and there are generally a couple of causes / solutions.

Either the software has actually installed, but Windows “thinks” it is only half way there. Have a look in your Program Files folder to see if there is a CATS folder – it should contain about seven files. If it looks like this is so, just create a shortcut manually to the programme file and then you can start using the software normally.

Or it may be the case that not all the files have been copied over. Everything you need is on the CD, in the Resources folder. Here is the solution:

Copy into the Program Files \ CATS folder the following files:

All sound files (extension ".wav") and the programme file (extension ".exe")
Plus, for the Grades 3 to 5 CD: "CatsHelp.chm" and words for "cats.csv"

Now copy into the "System" folder (probably C:\Windows\System):

OLEAUT32.DLL and MSVBVM60.DLL
Plus, for the Grades 3 to 5 CD: "HH.EXE" and "hhctrl.ocx"

NOTE: if you get a message saying that a file already exists, then do not over-write it - the version you already have will be OK (some of these files are standard Windows files).

Now just create a shortcut to the programme file.

Display Errors

There have been a small number of occasions when objects on screen do not display correctly. If you find that pictures seem to be missing when you fist run C.A.T.S then just re-start your computer. This will make sure the graphics files are registered correctly and will cure this problem.

If the "Put In Bar Lines" test does not show the barlines neatly aligned to the music then you may need to get updated screen or video card drivers from your computer supplier's website. This is a straight-forward fix and is only likely to be required on computers which have had hardware upgrades. (This problem, however, has only occurred three times since 2001 - so is relatively rare.)

Specific points

C.A.T.S vol.1 - Beginner to Grade 2

Some computers may need to be re-started after installing C.A.T.S in order for some files to register properly. If items are obviously missing from the screen when you first start the programme after installation then just re-start your computer.

C.A.T.S vol.2 - Grades 3 to 5

On very early versions of this CD-Rom (prior to version 1.01) the "Hang Note" section does not have accented letters. If you encounter this, please contact Take Note Publishing for the upgrade.

Some computers may need to be re-started after installing C.A.T.S in order for some files to register properly. If items are obviously missing from the screen when you first start the programme after installation then just re-start your computer.

Current versions

As at January 2009, the current version numbers for each CD are as follows:
Vol.1 - (CATS 0-2.exe) - 3.3.0.0
